When a Smile Needs Braces
We often recommend metal braces for people with more severe cases of misalignment, as these are very effective at tackling major alignment issues. We will begin by carefully examining your smile to assess the cause and extent of the misalignment. We also take age and other factors into consideration too. Remember, correcting your misalignment does offer esthetic benefits and that is wonderful, but you also obtain a healthier smile, with a reduced risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease, and even TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding).
How They Correct Smiles
The process is a simple one. We will first attach a bracket to the front facing side of each tooth. A thin wire is then connected to these brackets, one wire per arch. A band will help hold them in place, and for some we may need to attach additional bands. Tension in the arch wire is then adjusted during periodic visits to our office. As we adjust the tension, this shifts the teeth into a more even state. For some, this could take about two years, or possible two-and-a-half years to complete. Using Ceramic Brackets
We know that many teens and adults feel uncomfortable with the presence of metal braces. Which is why we can also provide a cosmetic approach. Instead of using metal for the brackets, we can custom-make them with ceramic. This is a strong material that is translucent like actual tooth enamel, and can be shaded to blend with your tooth. This is the same material used to create crowns and replacement teeth due its strength and lifelike appearance. This helps lower the visibility of the braces during treatment.
