shirley braces

Do you have severe dental misalignment? Do you assume a straighter smile isn’t possible? In these cases, we want you to reach out to our team right away. For many, braces can correct teeth and provide stunning results. In today’s blog, your Shirley, NY, pediatric dentist and orthodontist talks about the benefits of fixing uneven smiles with braces.

When to See Us for Treatment

When should you contact our team about braces? If you have uneven teeth, such as ones that are crooked, crowded, or overlapping one another, talk to us. This is especially true of your misalignment so severe, as braces can take on these major cases and offer an even smile. If you assume your smile is in too rough of shape to be corrected with orthodontics, talk to our team. You may be surprised to learn about your options! The straighter smile you have dreamed about is possible.

The Braces Approach

How do we shift your uneven smile with our metal braces? The process involves our team connecting metal brackets to the front-facing sides of each tooth. Once we do, we will connect a part of a thin arch wire to them, using a separate wire for the upper and lower portions. A band will secure the wires in place. We may also connect the upper and lower sets with additional bands. You can even choose the color of these bands, we have bright options and others that blend with the orthodontics.

Treatment involves our team adjusting tension in the arch wire during periodic visits to our office. When we do this, the teeth shift gradually. We continue this process for about two years as your smile is corrected. When we remove them, we will provide a retainer to wear at night. The jawbone still needs to finish reforming around the new positions of your teeth and we don’t want them to shift back and undo some of your stunning results, and a retainer can help!

Caring for Teeth During Treatment

During treatment it is paramount you practice good oral hygiene. You want to help prevent teeth stains that will be visible when they are removed, and to fight issues like cavities and gum disease. Be sure you brush and floss daily, and work around your orthodontics when you do. Try to avoid foods that are sticky, as they can become trapped and increase the risk of issues like cavities. Make time to see us for your routine appointments too.
