shirley braces

When you or your teen suffers from a more severe case of dental misalignment, treatment is needed to not only improve how your smile looks, but to offer a boost for bite function and oral health too. With traditional braces, we can straighten your smile! In today’s blog, your Shirley, NY, pediatric dentist and orthodontist talks about helping smiles with our braces.

The Causes of Misalignment

What causes misalignment to form in our smiles? Crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth could be due to complications in childhood, such as issues with the growth of the jaw or the eruption of your teeth. Losing baby teeth prematurely to decay or injury could impact alignment. As we reach the teen and adult years, factors like wisdom tooth eruption and tooth loss could also create misalignment. Treating the issue can improve your oral health and also help prevent related complications, such as tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorder, and even bruxism (teeth grinding). For more severe cases, we could correct smiles with traditional braces.

Help with Traditional Braces

How do traditional braces help correct your uneven smile? Our team will carefully examine your smile to assess the cause and extent of your tooth loss. If these are right for you, then we will attach metal brackets to the front-facing side of each tooth. We then connect these brackets with a portion of a thin arch wire. We may connect the upper and lower set with bands. During periodic visits to our office, we will adjust tension in the arch wire to gradually shift the teeth. The process could take as long as two years, as the jawbone and gums need to reform around the new positions of your teeth as they are gently shifted.

What Happens Next?

Following your treatment, you will have an even and healthier smile. We may recommend a retainer to be worn at night to help prevent the teeth from shifting back as the jawbone reforms around the new positions of your roots. If you have received treatment from metal orthodontics in the past from other offices and your teeth have since shifted, we could talk about treatment with a retainer or clear Invisalign® aligners.
